Warkworth Castle

Centuries of History

Strategically positioned where the Coquet River meets the North Sea coast, Warkworth Castle's site likely held Anglo-Saxon defences for the northern kings as early as the 8th century. The castle built here after the Norman invasion passed through royal and noble hands over the centuries.

It was the ambitious Percy family, taking ownership in 1332, who truly transformed Warkworth Castle into an architectural show of force. The Great Tower, over 100 feet tall with walls up to 18 feet thick, was intended to impress and intimidate. Through marriages and military feats, the later Percys expanded the castle into a palatial stronghold fit for hosting royalty including Elizabeth I.

After the Percys backed the losing side in the English Civil War, Warkworth Castle was abandoned and fell into ruin after 1646. Today you can vividly envision its medieval grandeur while uncovering its secrets.

Enter the Castle Grounds

Cross the river by the stone 14th century bridge into the outer bailey of Warkworth Castle. Beyond the gatehouse you'll find ruins of service buildings like the bakehouse, brewhouse and stables that supported the castle community. Don't miss the two-story chapel with delicate arched windows.

Heading uphill leads through another barbican gate into the inner castle grounds. From the large grassy keep, the majestic Great Tower looms high above you. But before entering, dip into the dark tunnels of the dungeon used for prisoners.

Climb up spiral stone steps to explore the Great Chamber where the Percy family once held lavish banquets and receptions. Admire intricate lion carvings in the Chapel. The view from the roof over the countryside is not to be missed. Discovering these medieval spaces lets you vividly envision castle life.

The Atmospheric Village

Beyond the castle itself lies the historic riverside village of Warkworth which creates a picturesque backdrop. The tiny main street lined with stone cottages and public houses looks nearly unchanged from medieval times.

Duck through the narrow arched alley called The Drunkard's Leap connecting the village to castle grounds. Enjoy riverside walks bordered by vibrant flowers. Pop in Warkworth's own 15th century church with striking heraldic stained glass commemorating the Percy family.
